 学业水平考试训练题(1 )

 一、 阅读理解 (1)

In the U.S.,speaking more than one language fluently is not very common except in Los Angeles,California.

The city has one of the largest population in the U.S.of young people between the ages of 18 and 34.This generation is often called millennials(新千年一代).More than half of millennials in Los Angeles are bilingual (双语的),which means they speak more than one language.

Maria Elena Burgos is cooking a Mexican breakfast. She says making Mexican food is just one of the many traditions in her home.Another is speaking Spanish to her children.

"We want them to be bilingual. We want to keep the Spanish somewhere in their learning too,not only at home."

When Ms Burgos first came to the United States from Mexico, she learned English. She knew her children would learn English quickly. So she wanted them to speak Spanish at home and study the language at school.

She says being bilingual will give them more opportunities in the future.Knowing Spanish also means the children can talk with their relatives in Mexico.

"When we had our children, one of the decisions we as parents made was to name them with a name that was easily pronounced in English and Spanish."

Elizabeth wants to know her family"s culture."The culture﹣to go back to our roots because that"s part of who we are."

Monica wants to pass on the culture to her children.

"It"s nice to know our culture and then to be able to pass it onto our children and grand﹣ children and everyone to let them know where we come from."

And,Monica says she does not speak only English and Spanish. She has even learned some Korean in school.

(1)Which of the following is a tradition of Maria?

  A.Cooking breakfast for her relatives.

B.Talking with her children in Spanish. C.Talking with her relatives in Spanish. D.Forcing her children to speak Spanish. (2)What can be inferred from Monica"s words?

A.She doesn"t care where she comes from. B.She looks forward to learning Spanish. C.Everyone should know his own culture. D.She doesn"t like American culture. (3)Which of the following is mentioned about children speaking more languages?

A.It can give children more chances in the future. B.It can make children feel proud before their friends. C.It can give the children a chance to go to a good college. D.It can let children go to the places where they want to go. (4)What"s the main purpose of this passage?

A.To entertain the readers with a funny story. B.To inform the readers of a shocking experiment result. C.To encourage more persons to learn a second language. D.To tell a truth that many people in Los Angeles are bilingual. (2)

Children grow taller in rural households where their mothers are supported to grow their own food, according to a new research from the University of East Anglia (UEA).The research, which looked at households in some developing countries, showed growing their own food helped mothers to prevent their children from being stunted, wasting away and underweight.Their children"s food was more varied, meaning these children had access to different classes of food nutrients.

The team from UEA analyzed studies that introduced women to home farming in some African and Asian countries. The home farming included growing brightly colored vitamin A﹣rich fruit and vegetables, and sometimes also included chicken farming. The health of these women"s children was assessed over the next year or more, and they did better than children of other women. No studies, however, reported on children"s eye health. The researchers concluded

that high﹣quality trials are needed to assess the impact of home food production on nutritional blindness in children, which is caused by an insufficient intake of vitamin A.

Around 250 million pre﹣school children are deficient in vitamin A,according to the World Health Organization.Vitamin A deficiency is the main global cause of childhood blindness, which also increases the risk of dying from other childhood diseases and vitamin A plays a significant role in normal immune function. It remains one of the most widespread micronutrient deficiencies globally.

Mrs Chizoba Bassey led the team conducting the systematic review. She said, "Well﹣evidenced interventions such as vitamin A supplementation programs should be adopted and expanded to children at greatest risk to prevent nutritional blindness."

Currently there is not enough evidence of the effects of home gardening on xerophthalmia(干眼症),night blindness or the death rate in children, but the evidence from the research shows that if women take up home gardening, the risk of being stunted, wasting away and underweight in their children will be reduced.Home farming may help to achieve sustainability in controlling vitamin A deficiency and can assist vitamin A supplementation programs where they are available. (1)What does the new study focus on?

A.Fruit and vegetables suitable for family gardening. B.The development of farming in Africa and Asia. C.Rural children"s health problems. D.Benefits of home farming. (2)What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?

A.The importance of nutrients. B.Causes of childhood blindness. C.Health risks of lack of vitamin A. D.Ways to improve kids" immune function. (3)Which of the following may Mrs Bassey agree with?

A.Nutritional blindness is preventable. B.Most of pre﹣school kids suffer from a nutrient deficiency. C.Home food production has proved good for children"s eyes.

D.Vegetables grown by housewives have higher nutritional value. (4)What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?

A.The urgency of doing further research. B.The necessity of encouraging home farming. C.The difficulty in controlling vitamin A deficiency. D.The relationship between home gardening and xerophthalmia. (3)

When British musician Paul Barton performs in central Thailand lately, his energetic listeners react wildly. Some pull his hair or jump on his piano.Others steal his music papers. The behavior is normal, because these crowds are truly wild﹣wild monkeys to be exact.

Barton plays often to the animals in Lopburi,an area known for its populations of wild monkeys. He has played at four sites, including at an ancient Hindu temple,a store and an old movie theater. The pianist hopes the music shows bring calm to the animals during the Coronavims Crisis in 2020.The pianist hopes the music shows bring calm to the animals during the Coronavims Crisis in 2020.The disease has caused problems for the monkeys, too. They are hungry. The restrictions on tourism mean fewer people come to see the monkeys and feed them.

The monkeys quickly surround Barton when he plays Greensleeves,Beethoven"s For Alice and Michael Nyman"s Diary of Love. Some of the creatures sit on his chair, while others climb up his body and touch his head. But,Barton keeps his attention on his performance, even as a small monkey runs over his hands on the instrument.Other monkeys take control of his music papers.

"It"s a wonderful opportunity to see the wild animals just being themselves,I was surprised to find that they were actually eating the music as I was playing it,I wasn"t going to let those things distract from the project which is to play the music for these wonderful creatures. We need to make an effort to make sure that they can eat properly so that they will be calmer and will not be aggressive. "said Barton.

The monkeys are Barton"s latest animal fans.Past wildlife audiences included elephants living in special protected areas.Barton hopes to raise awareness of the monkeys, hunger,At the same time,he hopes to study their behavior,as they react to classical music.

(1)Why did the musician play to the wild monkeys?

A.To see the wild animals just being themselves. B.To study their behavior as they react to music. C.To raise money for the wild monkeys" hunger. D.To reduce the bad effect of COVID﹣19 on them. (2)What kind of music did the musician play?
